Fact check · Tesla Roadster demo

Is the Tesla Roadster Flying Video Real or AI-Generated?

Tesla's Oct 15, 2026 Roadster demo is a real car — not AI. An unmanned prototype drove up an upside-down ramp at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, then flipped off and landed on its wheels, and Snopes rated the footage real. The TikTok clips of everyday cars blasting off are a different thing: AI remakes made from photos.

What Happened at the Oct 15 Demo

Tesla livestreamed the reveal on the evening of Oct 15, 2026 from a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, near Waco (CNBC). Top Gear had a reporter there and confirmed it in person (Top Gear).

The car was a prototype with no one inside (CNN). It used high-powered fans and 10 thrusters fed by compressed air to drive up an inverted ramp (TechCrunch), then rolled over in mid-air and landed on its wheels (CBS News).

It left the ground only briefly. The Verge describes it as having briefly flown (The Verge), an expert quoted by CNN called it hopping (CNN), and Snopes notes there was no sustained flight over a longer distance (Snopes).

Musk said the Roadster would go into production in 2028, and no price was announced (CBS News). The Rocket version is not approved for public road use (Electrek). Reports give conflicting reservation amounts, so we do not repeat any figure here.

Is It AI? What Fact-Checkers Said

Snopes rated the claim that the videos are real as True, writing that the footage was not made with AI tools or digital editing (Snopes).

SlashGear reached the same view, concluding the flip was likely not AI-generated (SlashGear). At the event Musk said an audience was there to prove it was not AI (CNN).

What App Made It?

No app made Tesla's demo: it was filmed live. The flying-car clips of everyday cars are made with AI video tools, and nobody can tell from a clip alone which tool made it.

One public option is Starrd, which lists a Make My Car Fly template (checked Oct 17, 2026). Our Starrd alternative page compares the two on facts only.

RoadsterAI has a browser maker for the same trend: two photos in, one 10-second vertical clip out. Try it on the homepage or read how to make your car fly.
